Overnight Camping Trip

Recently a few people had asked about overnight camping in canoe and kayak so the club has organised 2 trips (1 in April 2025 and the other in May 2025) on the river Avon from our base in Pershore to Tewkesbury with an overnight stop just past Strensham.

The were 6 people on each of the trips, the first trip including; Paul, Tim, Kevin, Matt, Russ and Clive. The second trip included; Paul, Tim, Russ, Carlos, Jacqui and Clive.

Once we had sortted the movement of the vechicles so we could get back easiliry we set off. Day one was paddling from Pershore to the camp location about 18.5km (11.5 miles) and took 5.5 hours including going through 3 locks (Pershore, Nafford and Strensham). On the first trip we had to portage round the last 2 locks and ANT (Avon Navigation Trust) was doing some essential maintenance and had closed them but thankfully by the time we did the second trip they were open and this had things a lot easier for us. We stopped at Nafford for some lunch and the obligatory view of Nafford weir. After lunch we headed off and decided to stop at The Flybridge, as it had opened again recently, for a beer.

The second day was 10.5km (6.5 miles) and took about 1.75 hours. After leaving the campsite and passing Bredon on the left handside we headed under the M5, and it is always noisy. Continuing down past the fleet the noise reduces significantly and we would have stopped but it was not open yet.

Overnight it cold on both occasions, dropping to about 5 or 6 degrees, but waking up net to the river is always a great feeling, and the weather soon improved as we broke camp and set off for Tewkesbury.

Both these trip were very successful and we are planning another one later in the year on a different section of the Avon, and maybe, on a different river, so if you are interested in trying something like his then please post a comment on the club FB page. Thanks for reading
