September Saturdays

On Saturday 26/9/26, six of us met at Pershore Riverside Centre (PRSC) on a beautifully warm, sunny morning. After a quick briefing we started to get on the water, most of us using the new EZ dock which certainly makes things easier and is a very civilised way of launching!
We paddled upstream to the lock at Wyre which was not 'in our favour' so we portaged round it. It is an unusual lock due to its diamond shape and it dates back to the 1630s!

We then continued upstream past Tiddle Widdle and Osier islands. Carlos said he'd investigate the creek around the island to take photos and report it if it was still blocked: on the way back he did, it wasn't so he won't!!
After stopping for a short snack break at the Coventry water main (and nearly leaving Leighton behind as he hadn't finished his apple!) we continued to Jubilee Bridge which was apparently built in 1897 commemorating Queen Victoria's diamond Jubilee, hence the name. Carlos enlightened us about the construction of the bridge to prevent cracking .. physics!

We then turned to head back downstream. En route Helen and Leighton gallantly tried to rid the bank of a burst helium balloon but had to admit defeat; I got everyone stuck in the lock (temporarily!) as I could NOT open the exit gate - two friendly guys had to help (another technique I need to learn!) - then I used my river knife properly for the first time to cut down some fishing line that had got caught in a tree ... before we used the fabulous new EZ dock again to get off the water back at PRSC.
Great paddle (about 10 miles), great weather, great company - and if course great cake from Helen afterwards!
Thanks all!
